I’ve tried most of the helmets out there. Why is the Tracer the best? First and most importantly, it’s one of the few out there that offers some rear, side, and front impact protection. A common fatal accident is tripping over rope on lead and hitting the back of the head. The half dome and armour helmets only have foam on the top of the helmet, offering no significant impact protection around the edges. The Petzl Meteor 3 offers even more protection all around, but I found it too bulky. The Mammut Tripod is also a full foam helmet, less expensive, and also recommended. But the Tracer I found to be the best because it’s relatively lower profile, less bulk, and it’s available in three sizes for a better fit.
