This is a good belay device. I got mine about a month ago at a nice sale price. Beware that it gets a bit of getting used to. At first, the amount of friction is too much and it can be annoying. However, if you pull it up, away from the belay carabiner, the friction is reduced, and it is much easier to feed rope or lower a top-rope climber.

I have only used this top-roping in the gym. No idea how it performs on rappel; I assume that it will be OK, but friction may be an issue.

My other two devices, which I have used for years, are Black Diamond ATC and ATC XP. For the record, I like the regular ATC the best — it is the gold standard by which other devices should be measured and justify themselves. For example, I find the ATC XP unnecessarily bulkier and use it less than this Metolius. If you are a beginner, just get a regular ATC, even if the price of something else may be lower.

If you are up for trying a new belay device, this is a nice, simple, light one. Recommended.
